Silver Hill Hospital, a nationally-recognized psychiatric hospital, is pleased to announce that Eric D. Collins, M.D., has been named as Physician-in-Chief. Dr. Collins was ranked among the best addiction psychiatrists in the United States this year by U.S. News and World Report.

As Physician-in-Chief, Dr. Collins will manage the medical staff at Silver Hill, drawing on his extensive teaching and administrative expertise. “I’m very pleased to have the opportunity to work with the outstanding staff here at Silver Hill Hospital, which has been providing top-quality psychiatric and addiction care for many years.“
Dr. Collins was previously the Medical Director of Addiction Services at Columbia University Medical Center, where he specialized in acute inpatient management of patients with both addictions and psychiatric disorders and collaborated to develop the addiction care at Columbia’s E. 60th Street intensive outpatient program. In addition, Dr. Collins taught medical students, residents, and fellows extensively, and he will continue teaching at Columbia while serving at Silver Hill. U.S. News and World Report recognized Dr. Collins for his work both at Columbia and in his private addiction psychiatry practice, which Dr. Collins continues to maintain both in New York and now in New Canaan, CT.
Dr. Collins is Board Certified in Psychiatry, Addiction Psychiatry and Pyschosomatic Medicine by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, as well as in Addiction Medicine by the American Board of Addiction Medicine. He is also a member of Member of American Academy of Addiction Psychiatrists. He has had numerous academic appointments at Columbia University, where he is currently Associate Clinical Professor of Psychiatry, with a dual appointment in the Department of Anesthesiology.
After earning his B.A. in Economics from Yale University, Dr. Collins taught Chemistry, AP Chemistry, and Physics before attending Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, where he earned his medical degree in 1990. He completed his residency in Psychiatry and fellowships in Addiction Psychiatry and Consultation-Liaison Psychiatry (Psychosomatic Medicine) at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital and the New York State Psychiatric Institute. Dr. Collins has written over 25 academic articles, including a landmark study published in 2005 in the prestigious Journal of the American Medial Association, showing that the risks of general anesthesia for heroin detoxification outweighed the benefits.
