Amen Clinics, Inc. (Newport Beach, Calif.), which specializes in the treatment of a broad spectrum of brain and behavioral health issues, has announced the appointment of Robert R. Johnson, DO, to national medical director.  In this position, he will oversee medical staff, program development, and assist with marketing and business development.

Throughout his 25-year career, Johnson has built psychiatric systems that successfully treat complex patients, including serving as medical director at Sierra Tucson, a premier treatment center for addictions, mental and behavioral health disorders. Johnson also served as senior medical director at College Hospital for ten years, helping it become one of the busiest psychiatric hospitals in Orange County. Board-certified in psychiatry and addiction medicine, he has also provided behavioral health consulting for public and private mental health organizations, and is a certified executive coach who has worked with leaders in companies such as Rockwell International, Sony, Disney, and the US Olympic Committee.

“In our industry, it’s common to find patients who have hit a wall, whose needs outstrip the ability or resources of any one person,” said Johnson, who is a certified Diplomate from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and American Board of Addiction Medicine. “It truly does take a village – an effective, collaborative team – who can marry their passion for the work with cutting edge technology to help patients break out of their cycle of recidivism and treatment resistance.”

He also spoke of the need to address the multiple clinical needs of patient:  “To create sustainable clinical gains, programs and organizations have to effectively address patients’ co-occurring issues, and the brain system abnormalities they reflect – whether their presenting issue is trauma, anxiety or mood disorders, dementia, addiction, or ADHD. As Daniel says, ‘These are not single or simple illnesses.’”

Dr. Daniel Amen, CEO and founder of Amen Clinics, states, “Dr. Johnson is exactly the right person to lead us through our next stage of development and expansion. He brings not only a genuine passion for an integrative approach to treatment, but a true commitment to engage both patients and clinicians in the conversations that result in personal and organizational transformation. We couldn’t be more fortunate to have such a competent and compassionate leader.”
