The not-for-profit organization 10,000 Beds, which gathers donated scholarships from addiction treatment centers and matches them to individuals in need, has received a micro-grant from the Institute for the Advancement of Behavioral Healthcare (IABHC) Fund.

“The IABHC micro-grant is invaluable and will directly help us place more than 100 clients in donated treatment beds,” says Jean Krisle, CEO of 10,000 Beds. “When we speak with clients who are receiving a scholarship, they literally panic about how they might find transportation to travel to the treatment center. When we can provide financial support for travel, it’s a huge relief to them.”

To date, 10,000 Beds has already awarded $1 million worth of scholarships, ranging from 30-day to two-year stays.

Krisle says 10,000 Beds is an all-volunteer effort that has grown to take on a life of its own thanks to the enthusiastic response from treatment centers since its launch a year ago. The organization plays a significant role by interviewing potential clients before connecting them to a treatment center for further intake evaluation. Likewise, 10,000 Beds only recommends clients to high-quality treatment centers that Krisle and her board have evaluated in person.

“We support the great work of 10,000 Beds because it reflects a larger industry mission to create effective pathways to treatment and recovery,” says Douglas J. Edwards, director of the Institute for the Advancement of Behavioral Healthcare. “There is a staggering number of people who need treatment services, meanwhile, there are empty beds in treatment centers in every state. 10,000 Beds has successfully made the connection between the two.”

IABHC supports the behavioral health industry by awarding micro-grants to not-for-profit organizations typically ranging from $5,000 to $10,000.
