More than 700,000 people visit emergency rooms each year as a result of adverse drug reactions and 106,000 Americans die from properly prescribed and correctly taken medications.

While justified in many situations as an effective clinical intervention, polypharmacy is an ever-increasing concern for today’s mental health administrators. The amount of psychiatric polypharmacy has been increasing annually. Polypharmacy can quickly become a money drain for organizations. It is estimated that unneeded prescriptions cost the nation’s public and private health plans as much as $50 billion annually.

“Managing Psychiatric Polypharmacy” by Charles Klein, Ph.D., aims to raise awareness of inappropriate polypharmacy, or polypharmacy that goes against good medical evidence and practice, and provides possible solutions for behavioral health providers to help manage polypharmacy.
