Transcending the Double Closet of Wealth and Substance Abuse

The presentation will outline and address the unique clinical and cultural issues men and women of wealth, power and status bring into their addiction treatment. These include the therapist's conscious and unconscious reactions towards people of wealth and the client’s view of the therapist as a servant or employee.   The presentation will include an explanation of tools that can be used in the treatment relationship through clinical vignettes and empirical research.

Learning objectives:

Participants will be able to:

  • Identify and utilize transferential and counter-transferential issues that impact the psychotherapeutic relationship.
  • Describe the constructs of wealthism and internalized wealthism.
  • Recognize the construct of "the Double Closet" and how it impacts the treatment with people of wealth, power and status.
