Clients' artwork helps spread holiday cheer

Like many companies during the holiday season, the Behavioral Healthcare staff receives its fair share of greeting cards from clients, contributors, and other people we meet in our effort to know the field better.

This year, we got a card in the mail from Genoa Healthcare, an onsite pharmacy services provider based in Eagan, Minn. But when we turned the card around, we soon found out that this card was a little different.

The artwork on the front of the card was painted by a client at one of the treatment facilities in which Genoa has established a pharmacy. This year, the company launched its first annual holiday card design contest and over 200 entries were received.

"We always send a card each holiday season, but we wanted it to mean a little more this year, so we created a contest," explained Sarah Zimmer, Genoa's marketing communications manager. "It gave our clients the opportunity to share their creativity."

The competition was so close that two winners were chosen. One version of the card was sent to customers and the other was sent to employees. The paintings were done by Lisa Glynn, a client at the Janet Wattles Center in Rockford, Ill., and Alice Oehmich, a client at Centerstone in Bloomington, Ind. “We couldn’t decide between the top two, so we used both,” noted Zimmer.

With such a positive response, Zimmer said clients are already asking if they plan to do it again next year. The answer, of course, is a resounding "yes."
