I was standing outside of the office today and had a brief chat with one of the adults we serve in our day program. He reentered the building, and immediately another consumer popped his head out the door. This fellow was definitely not a person whom you would want to encounter at 1 AM in a dark parking garage. Big tattoo on the neck, chains, leather vest— an intimidating presence. He asked (about the fellow I had been talking with previously), "Is he OK? He's not having a good day, and I've been watching out for him." Such a simple act of kindness, communicated so genuinely! As we talk about strengths-based care for the people we serve, I'll remember this gentleman for a long, long time. Meeting people like him is one of the honors of this profession!

Thanks for sharing, Ann. Sounds like we could all use some stigma busting on all levels.
