ValueOptions is rolling out a "Signature Network" of selected providers devoted to specialized treatment for the most difficult behavioral health cases. One segment of the network is devoted to eating disorders and substance use disorders, with another segment to be announced later this year. The new network reflects a "centers of excellence" approach to providing care for challenging cases. ValueOptions chose the participating organizations for their expertise in providing high-quality, individualized care.

Behavioral Healthcare spoke with Christopher Dennis, M.D., Chief Medical Officer of the Commercial Division and Vice President and Regional Medical Director at ValueOptions, to learn more about the new program, a pioneering “network within a network” aimed at addressing the most difficult behavioral health cases.

Launched in February, the Signature Network consists of some of the most prominent treatment programs in the country. All of them are already providers in the ValueOptions network, and their contracts will not change when they care for patients referred through the Signature Network by ValueOptions case managers. Patients will receive intensive and inpatient care at the Centers of Excellence, which will be devoted to patients who have not done well with standard treatment methods.

The Signature Network list will expand throughout the year as new specialties are added, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), complex child/adolescent disorders, borderline personality disorder, first-episode psychotic disorders, treatment-resistant depression and bipolar disorder.

Programs were selected based on their capabilities to deliver individualized treatment, evidence-based practices, and multidisciplinary approaches to discharge planning. This includes coordination with patient aftercare programs and steps to ease patient transitions back to their communities.

“The Centers of Excellence program was developed based on our existing network,” said Dennis. “These are facilities with whom we’ve had a strong working relationship over the years, programs that demonstrate clinical excellence.”

ValueOptions identifies patients who, for various reasons, require a higher level of case management, said Dennis. Even if members don’t meet the criteria for entering the “Centers of Excellence” program, which includes intensive case management and is expected to focus on frequent relapsers, they can still go to these programs, said Dennis.
