New Residence Focuses on Families Affected by Brain Injuries

(5/1/2008)
Press Release
Irving, TX (April 30, 2008) – Centre for Neuro Skills announced today the grand opening of the Steve Ashley House, a temporary residence for families of individuals with brain injuries currently being treated at the nation’s leader in postacute brain injury rehabilitation.

The grand opening will be held Thursday, May 8, 2008, with a Ribbon Cutting ceremony at 2:00 p.m., followed by an Open House at 2:30 p.m. The event will honor Steve Ashley, brother of Dr. Mark J. Ashley, CNS founder and president, as well as the 5.3 million individuals currently living with brain injury.

In 1972, a devastating brain injury left 21-year-old Steve Ashley completely disabled, with no hope for significant recovery. Dr. Ashley knew that, through intense therapy, Steve could regain his life. As one of CNS’s first clients, Steve beat the odds and mastered basic living skills such as eating, turning himself in bed and using his voice and his body.

"The tragedy of brain injury devastated my family emotionally and financially,” said Dr. Mark Ashley. “The Steve Ashley House will allow us to lessen the impact of brain injury on other families."

This state-of-the-art 37,000 square foot home has three individual condos, which will be made available to family members of CNS clients for temporary visits.  Each residence has its own kitchen with granite counter tops and stainless steel appliances, a living area with electric fireplaces, and bathrooms with individual vanities.

CNS is the nation’s leader in brain injury rehabilitation, thus clients come from around the globe to receive the best rehabilitation possible, specifically 48 states and eight foreign countries. CNS was founded on family, and recognizes that family is an important part of rehabilitation, thus the need to provide a safe haven for families who do not live near a CNS facility.

Founded in 1980, Centre for Neuro Skills® (CNS) is an experienced and trusted source of rehabilitation programs for acquired brain injury. With facilities in Bakersfield and Los Angeles, California, and Dallas, Texas, CNS offers intensive, cost-effective and outcome-driven residential, outpatient, and in-home rehabilitation programs for individuals recovering from all types of acquired brain injury.
